1. the act or process of subdividing, or the fact of being subdivided.
2. an instance of this.
3. one of the parts into which something is subdivided.
4. an area of land divided into lots for specified development: urban subdivision; rural subdivision.
5. Agriculture a fence on a property other than a boundary fence.
6. Nautical the separation of the hull of a ship into compartments by water-tight bulkheads to ensure that flooding of one compartment resulting from damage does not enter adjacent spaces.
